How to Read a Supplement Fact Panel

If you’re thinking about buying a dietary supplement for your children, it’s important to inform yourself about the product and carefully read the label so you know what you’re buying. It’s also advisable to consult with a health care professional.

The Supplement Facts panel is usually found on the back or side panel of the package and contains valuable information about the supplement.

What is included in the Supplements Facts panel?

Here are the different sections of the Supplement Facts panel and what they mean.

1. How Many Gummies Per Serving and How Many Servings Are in The Bottle?

You’ll see serving sizes and servings per bottle on the Supplement Facts panel. In the example above, the recommended serving is 1 – 2 gummy vitamins, based on age. This tells you how many of the supplement to provide your child at one time. The servings per bottle lets you know how long the bottle will last you if you take it as directed.

2. Amount Per Serving

This column tells you the name of the dietary ingredients included and how much of each nutrient is included per serving. Some of the dietary ingredients include fats, protein, vitamins and minerals. Depending on the nutrient, the amount is often listed in grams (g), milligrams (mg) or micrograms (mcg). Some nutrients will also list the type of vitamin or mineral used in the supplement.

For example, you can see 1 gummy provides 0.9mg of Vitamin B6 and the type of B6 in the supplement is from pyridoxine HCl.

3. Understanding the Percent Daily Value (%DV)

The Daily Value is the amount of a nutrient that is recommended to meet the needs of most children. The % Daily Value, or the % DV, is the percent of the Daily Value of a dietary ingredient that is in a serving of the product. Your child’s unique needs may be different than the Daily Value, but it can tell you if a supplement is high or low in a nutrient and whether it contributes a lot, or a little, to your child’s daily diet.

In the example above, you can see that 1 gummy provides 180% of the Daily Value for Vitamin B6 for children 2-3 and two gummies provide 106% of Vitamin B6 for children 4 years or older.

4. Other Ingredients Are Important Too!

These are the non-dietary ingredients in the product, such as the ingredients to make a gummy vitamin. It’s important to read these ingredients carefully, especially if your child has allergies or food intolerances.
